A white substance discovered in a work area at the White House during a routine inspection has tested positive for cocaine, as reported by US media. The substance prompted an emergency evacuation of the White House complex on Sunday night. President Joe Biden and his family were not present at the time, as they were staying at the Camp David residence.
The preliminary positive test results were disclosed by the Washington Post and AP News, citing law enforcement sources. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi stated that the white powder was found “inside a work area” of the West Wing, leading to the closure of the complex around 20:45 local time (01:45 BST) as a precautionary measure.
Guglielmi emphasized that the substance was determined to be “non-hazardous” by the fire department. However, he did not confirm the preliminary test results and stated that the item has been sent for additional testing. An ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine how the substance entered the White House.
The West Wing, a significant part of the White House, encompasses various offices, including those of the president, vice-president, White House chief of staff, press secretary, and numerous other staff members with authorized access.
