President Joe Biden stated on Saturday that the United States does not endorse a fast-tracked process for Ukraine to join NATO at the conclusion of the ongoing conflict. Biden emphasized that Ukraine must meet specific criteria for NATO membership, raising concerns about corruption within the country.
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks commitments from NATO member nations to accept Ukraine into the alliance after the resolution of the conflict, President Biden highlighted that NATO membership is not automatic. Biden made these remarks to reporters before departing for Philadelphia.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, in a recent interview with USA TODAY, confirmed that NATO members agree on Ukraine eventually becoming a member but emphasized the importance of Ukraine first achieving victory in the war. Stoltenberg stressed that until Ukraine achieves success in the conflict, there is no membership issue to discuss. He further anticipated NATO nations making new decisions on long-term concrete support for Ukraine during an upcoming summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.
President Zelenskyy, in a recent interview with NBC News, issued a warning to American politicians and 2024 presidential candidates expressing skepticism about supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia. Zelenskyy highlighted the potential consequences of Ukraine’s defeat, stating that it could embolden Russia to target Baltic countries, Poland, or other NATO members, putting the United States in a position where it would have to choose between NATO’s collapse or engaging in war.
Following a meeting of NATO Ministers of Defense in Brussels, Secretary-General Stoltenberg announced plans to establish a “new NATO-Ukraine Council,” elevating Ukraine’s status to equal standing with NATO countries. However, this falls short of the commitments sought by Zelenskyy from NATO leaders ahead of the alliance’s upcoming summit.
President Biden acknowledged that Ukraine has demonstrated its military coordination with NATO nations but emphasized that there are other unresolved issues that Ukraine needs to address to meet the alliance’s standards. Biden’s stance indicates that the U.S. will not make the path to NATO membership easier for Ukraine without proper considerations and reforms.
