Afghan authorities have revised the death toll from a series of earthquakes that hit western Herat over the weekend, reducing it to around 1,000. Initially, the Taliban government reported over 2,000 casualties from the magnitude 6.3 quake, with its epicenter in rural communities northwest of Herat city.
The confusion surrounding the death toll is attributed to the remote location of the affected area and the double reporting by various rescue agencies. Public Health Minister Qalandar Ebad clarified the situation, stating that there were over 1,000 people killed in the initial incident. On Wednesday morning, another earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck the same region, where thousands of people have been forced to spend their fourth night outdoors. Officials reported one death and 130 injuries resulting from this latest earthquake.
