A tragic incident occurred in Australia when a whale collided with a boat, leading to the death of one individual and the injury of another, as reported by local police authorities.
The unfortunate event took place near La Perouse, located 14 km (nine miles) south-east of Sydney, during a fishing trip. Concerns arose when the boat was found deserted and moving in circles on the water.
Such fatal incidents involving whales in the area are quite uncommon. A New South Wales state minister described the incident as “an absolute freak accident.”
According to the police statement, the collision presumably caused the boat to list, resulting in both individuals being thrown into the water. Water Police Acting Superintendent Siobhan Munro commented on the possible scenario, saying, “Early reports suggest that a whale may have either breached near the boat or directly onto it.” She also mentioned that she had not encountered a similar event in her tenure.
The deceased, a 61-year-old man, was found unconscious and was declared dead on the spot. On the other hand, the boat’s 53-year-old skipper was rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently stable.
Australia is home to numerous whale species, with 10 large and 20 smaller species frequenting its coastlines. As of now, the specific whale species involved in the recent collision has not been identified.
