Napoli’s star forward, Victor Osimhen, is contemplating “legal action” against his own football club, Napoli, in the wake of a controversial video ridiculing him. This video was briefly available on Napoli’s official TikTok account before being removed.
Osimhen’s representative, Roberto Calenda, conveyed his sentiments through a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Calenda emphasized that the video inflicted “considerable harm” upon the player, stating: “What transpired today on Napoli’s TikTok profile is entirely unacceptable. A video making fun of Victor was initially displayed and then, albeit belatedly, taken down.”
Calenda further added, “We are keeping our options open for legal measures and any other necessary steps to safeguard Victor.”
The contentious video arose after Osimhen failed to score from the penalty spot during a 0-0 draw with Bologna in Serie A. This clip highlighted the Nigerian striker’s missed penalty, with a peculiar, high-pitched voiceover added for effect.
The previous season, Osimhen had been pivotal for Napoli, netting 31 goals across all tournaments. His contributions played a significant role in Napoli securing their first Serie A title in thirty years.
The ill-advised video appears in the midst of what seems to be mounting tension between Osimhen and Napoli’s head coach, Rudi Garcia. During the aforementioned game, Osimhen was visibly frustrated with Garcia when he was taken off the field, with just four minutes left in the match.
Post-game, Garcia addressed the press, saying: “Football’s greats have all missed penalties at some point. Our conversations, including the one about him being subbed off, will remain within the confines of our locker room.”
Recent transfer speculation saw Manchester United expressing interest in Osimhen, although he hasn’t committed to a renewed contract with Napoli.
