Sharon Rooney is among the celebrities confirmed for The Celebrity Traitors.
Fans can get their fill of the Scottish actress, 37, ahead of the BBC series, as her ‘must-watch’ and ‘brilliant’ show is available to stream on Channel 4.
Sharon’s career-defining role came from portraying Rae Earl in the hugely popular E4 series My Mad Fat Diary. The programme follows Rae, a troubled teenager, as she reintegrates with her friendship group after spending four months in a psychiatric hospital.
Her friends, however, are oblivious to this and believe she had been away in France. Rae tries to rebuild her bond with her closest friend, Chloe, who remains unaware of Rae’s struggles with mental health and body image, while also attempting to win over Chloe’s new circle of friends, Finn, Archie, Izzy and Chop.
The series, which draws inspiration from the novel My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary by Rae Earl, made its debut in 2013 and ran for three seasons before concluding in 2015, reports the Mirror.
Alongside Sharon’s star-making turn, the show also featured a number of well-known faces early in their careers. Killing Eve star Jodie Comer appears as Rae’s best friend Chloe.
Hollyoaks star Nico Mirallegro portrays Rae’s love interest Finn, Spike Island’s Jordan Murphy takes on the role of Chop, Trying star Ciara Baxendale plays Izzy, and Dan Cohen features as Archie.
Further cast members include Keith Allen as Victor Earl, Rae’s father, Claire Rushbrook as Linda Earl-Bouchtat, Rae’s mother, Ian Hart as Kester Gill, Rae’s therapist, and Debra Stephenson as Chloe’s mum.
The series has proved a massive hit with audiences, boasting an outstanding 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
One viewer commented: “Such a brilliant show, don’t be fooled in thinking it’s for teens. The way it covers mental health issues is so spot on and especially Rae the lead character she’s so relatable even with her attitude and flaws. Must watch.”
A separate viewer wrote: “A great comedy, with all the happy and sad elements that happen in the life of an average teenager” while another enthusiast added: “MMFD series 1 is fresh funny and so relatable. Sharon Rooney is a revelation. Script is terrific and the entire cast brilliant.”
Elsewhere, a further viewer remarked: “My Mad Fat Diary is one of the funniest, most touching, realistic, well written and brilliant shows I have ever seen.”
While yet another fan concluded: “MMFD is honestly one of the most amazing shows I’ve watched in the last year.”
My Mad Fat Diary is available to watch now on Channel 4.
