Voters are going to the polls today to choose a new Liverpool city councillor. Voters in Aigburth are to select a new representative after the Liberal Democrats confirmed Cllr Dave Antrobus stepped down from his position on the local authority for health reasons.
As a result, more than 4,000 ballots will be issued to elect a replacement. It was Cllr Antrobus’ second spell as a city councillor, having first been elected in 1996.
He represented the old Aigburth ward until 2004 before being elected as the Mossley Hill councillor for a further four years. After 15 years away, he returned to the Aigburth seat for the Liberal Democrats in the all-out elections in 2023.
From 7am, polls will open for votes to be cast for six candidates who will contest the seat. Liverpool Council announced the line-up of would-be councillors last month.
The Liberal Democrats were first out of the gate when they confirmed their hopeful for the seat, announcing Dave Thomas as their representative.
Jim Davies will contest the seat for Labour while Reform will hope to win its first seat on the city council with Harry Gallimore-King.
Mr Gallimore-King, previously stood as a Green Party candidate in Anfield in 2019 before switching to the Conservatives two years later, took fourth place with 54 voters for his party in last year’s Sefton Park by-election.
Chris Hall will represent the Conservatives – who have not held a city council seat since 1998 – while Paul Ruddick is standing for the Green Party.
Craig Carden is standing as an independent candidate in the six-way race.
Former Cllr Antrobus comfortably won re-election to the city council almost three years ago when all 64 newly drawn wards went to the polls.
He secured more than 50% of the vote on a 42% turn out. Poll cards have been issued to households in the ward with polls opening from 7am to 10pm.
Those hoping to cast a vote are required to bring photo ID to their chosen polling booth.
