Director-actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele have been found dead on Sunday at a Los Angeles home he owned, a law enforcement official has confirmed. Investigators believe they suffered stab wounds and a family member is being questioned by investigators, the official said, under the condition of anonymity.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a medical aid request shortly after 3.30 pm local time and found a 78-year-old man and 68-year-old woman dead inside.

Detectives with the Robbery Homicide Division were investigating an “apparent homicide” at Reiner’s home, said Captain Mike Bland with the Los Angeles Police Department as per AP.

Los Angeles authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the people found dead at the residence in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood on the city’s west side that’s home to many celebrities.

The LA mayor Karen Bass has called Reiner’s death a devastating loss for the city.

In a statement she said: “Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice. An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.”

Reiner was responsible for directing a slew of movie hits over the years, including The Princess Bride in 1987), Misery in 1990), Oscar best picture nominee A Few Good Men in 1992), The American President in 1995 and The Bucket List in 2007.

He was also a co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment, the production company behind such films as City Slickers and The Shawshank Redemption and Seinfeld, one of the most lucrative television shows of all time.

As an actor, he appeared in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street as stockbroker Max Belfort in scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill that were largely improvised.

He has a slew of cameo appearances on television shows including 30 Rock, The Simpsons, Hannah Montana, and New Girl.

Reiner was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, and married photographer Michele Singer Reiner in 1989. The two have three children together and met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally.

He was previously married to actor-director Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner.

His father, Carl, died in 2020 at age 98 and his ex-wife Penny died in 2018.

Killings are rare in the prestigious Hollywood neighbourhood of Brentwood. Sunday’s homicide investigation is located roughly a mile from the home where O.J. Simpson’s wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were killed in 1994, but OJ was later acquitted of the murders after a lengthy, nationally televised trial.

A civil jury later found Simpson liable for wrongful death, ordering him to pay millions to the families of the two victims.
