Israeli PM Netanyahu: “We Are at War and We Will Win”

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, made a resolute proclamation in the wake of a surprise barrage of rockets from the Gaza Strip, orchestrated by the Hamas militant group: “We are at war and we will win.” This stern declaration set the tone for an escalating conflict between the two regions.

The attacks, unfolding on Saturday, left several Israeli towns engulfed in large columns of black smoke. Visuals from the ground depicted cars on fire and structures suffering significant damage.

Backing the Prime Minister’s declaration, Israel’s Defense Minister said that Hamas had initiated a confrontation of significant magnitude, having “launched a war” against the nation. He was unwavering in his conviction that Israel would prevail against its adversaries.

Palestine’s President Mahmoud Abbas, on the other hand, asserted the Palestinian people’s right to defend themselves against what they see as aggression.

Casualty reports have been continuously updated, with current numbers indicating that at least 22 individuals lost their lives, with a further 545 injured. Both the Israeli ambulance service and the health ministry are working tirelessly to provide aid and accurate information.

As the conflict deepened, there were unusual sightings of Hamas fighters attempting to breach the Israeli border using methods like paragliders and small boats. In the town of Sderot, some of these fighters allegedly became embroiled in street skirmishes.

In the midst of the turmoil, cities including Tel Aviv, Ashkelon, Yavne, and Kfar Aviv experienced explosions, leading to widespread panic and air raid sirens resounding across southern and central parts of Israel. Among the victims was a 70-year-old woman who sustained critical injuries from a rocket impact on her southern Israeli home.

Responding to the onslaught, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) began a series of countermeasures. They reiterated their stern warning to Hamas about the impending consequences of their actions.

The international community’s reactions were swift. While countries like France, Germany, and Italy denounced the attacks, UK leaders including PM Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary James Cleverly stressed Israel’s right to self-defense. Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, condemned the attacks as terror acts.

Yet, not all were critical of the Palestinian stance. Iran’s military commander, Rahim Safavi, expressed solidarity with the Palestinian fighters.

The fresh hostilities between Israel and the Gaza Strip are seen against a backdrop of longstanding tensions, including recent conflicts in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. As the situation remains fluid, global onlookers hope for a swift return to peace and stability.
