Authorities in London have issued a public warning to avoid approaching a man linked to a chemical attack that injured a woman and two young girls in the south of the city. The suspect, identified as Abdul Shokoor Ezedi from Newcastle, is notable for significant injuries on the right side of his face. Ezedi, 35, was last observed in the Caledonian Road area of north London, with police suggesting he may have traveled from Newcastle prior to the incident near Clapham Common.
The search for Ezedi is a collaborative effort involving the Metropolitan Police, Northumbria Police, and the British Transport Police. The attack, which took place on Wednesday, involved a corrosive substance, identified as alkaline, and has left a 31-year-old mother and her daughters, aged three and eight, hospitalized. The younger child and the mother are reported to possibly face life-changing injuries from the attack.
The incident, described by police as “targeted,” saw a total of twelve individuals affected, including the immediate victims, five police officers responding to the scene, and several bystanders who intervened to help. The bystanders suffered minor burns but have since been discharged from the hospital.
Following the attack, Ezedi is said to have attempted to flee in a vehicle, which resulted in a collision with another car before he left the scene on foot. Superintendent Gabriel Cameron of the Metropolitan Police has strongly advised the public not to engage with Ezedi if spotted but to instead contact emergency services immediately. The police have expressed confidence in apprehending the suspect, emphasizing the extensive resources committed to the manhunt.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, acknowledged the severity of the incident while also noting the rarity of chemical attacks. He commended the bravery of both the officers and civilians who responded to the event.
CCTV footage capturing the moments following the attack has circulated, showing the distressing sequence of events that unfolded, including a car being driven towards the victims and the subsequent assault.
This incident has heightened concerns regarding public safety and the use of corrosive substances in attacks, prompting a swift law enforcement response and community support for the victims.
