A black bear was spotted cooling off in a swimming pool in the backyard of a house in California amidst an extreme heat wave that has hit parts of the US, breaking temperature records across states. The heat dome intensifying over the Western United States is expected to worsen during the weekend, with around 100 heat records potentially falling. More than 90 million people are under heat alerts as the heat dome expands into places like California, where the state is experiencing its first extreme heat wave of the year.
The National Weather Service in Phoenix described the heat dome as “one of the strongest high pressure systems this region has ever seen.” Several high temperature records have already been broken in the US since June, adding to the heatwave’s severity. Areas like Texas, Florida, and Arizona have been facing dangerously hot conditions for weeks, with Phoenix enduring a likely record-breaking streak of consecutive 110-degree days, leading to closures and adjusted hours for businesses and parks.
Amidst these scorching temperatures, the Burbank Police Department posted a video on social media showing a black bear taking a refreshing dip in the pool to escape the heat. After enjoying the water, the bear scaled over a nearby wall and climbed up a tree. Along with the footage, the police department also shared safety tips for encountering bears.
