Donald Trump’s widely criticized selection of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as the country’s next attorney general didn’t come as a shock to conservative lawyer George Conway, who sarcastically praised the pick — but not for the appointee’s legal prowess or breadth of experience.“Everybody is shocked, surprised — there’s nothing surprising about this,” Conway, a staunch Trump critic and Lincoln Project co-founder said Wednesday night during an appearance on CNN’s “The Source” with Kaitlan Collins. “Matt Gaetz, in a lot of ways, is the perfect attorney general for Donald Trump.”Conway continued his assessment of Trump’s latest selection to his new administration by noting that both the president-elect and the person he tapped to become the nation’s highest-ranking law enforcement officer have criminal histories with the Justice Department.ALSO READ: The one belief that predicted Trump voters with scary accuracy“We have a criminal – a convicted criminal who is president – who has been adjudicated to have engaged in sexual abuse so why not select a guy who has been loyal to him,” Conway said, adding “And who wants to seek revenge in the same way Donald Trump does, and, who was accused of sex trafficking. He’s the perfect choice. So, I don’t know why anyone is surprised.”CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig, a former U.S. attorney, told Collins he wanted to “underscore the stakes,” for the panel, noting that the attorney general is in charge of “110,000 employees, 94 U.S attorneys’ offices, the entire FBI, the entire DEA, the entire ATF, the solicitor general, who handles all the Supreme Court litigation for the government, the U.S. Marshals, [and] the Federal Bureau of Prisons.”“This is a man who could not be hired as an assistant U.S attorney at any major district,” Conway added. “He probably couldn’t be hired as a paralegal. He probably wouldn’t even pass a background check.”CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams, a former federal prosecutor, jumped in to say that Gaetz “certainly does have experience with the Justice Department, it’s just simply being investigated for sex crimes,” he said in another moment mocking Trump’s pick. “This is not a serious pick,” he concluded.Watch the clip below or at this link.
