There was a lot of support for Kamala Harris in and around Liverpool in New York State
Liverpool is a left-wing city and it has been a Labour stronghold in British general elections for decades. Today, 3,287 miles away from our home, a tiny village with the same name has seen its state vote for Kamala Harris in the US presidential election.
Found in the town of Salina in Onondaga County, New York state, Liverpool is a village of just over 2,000 people. Named after this city, it was originally known as ‘Little Ireland’ due to the amount of Irish migrants who settled there – another thing it has in common with us.
Millions of Americans went to the polls on November 5 to elect their next President, making their choice between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Ms Harris and Former President Trump ended this year’s campaign with a fierce battle for the key state of Pennsylvania.

Ms Harris finished her night in Philadelphia at the art museum steps made famous in ‘Rocky’, where she said “the momentum is on our side”. Meanwhile, Mr Trump started the day in North Carolina and finished it in Michigan, but he spoke in Reading and Pittsburgh in between.
The former president combined false claims about voter fraud with warnings about migrants committing crimes and promises to revitalise the United States. He said: “With your vote tomorrow, we can fix every single problem our country faces and lead America, and indeed the whole world, to new heights of glory.”
CNN projected that Kamala Harris will win New York State at around 2.30am GMT on Wednesday. The state has 28 electoral college votes, just over 10% of the number a candidate needs to claim a majority and win the presidency.
New York State has long been a stronghold for the democrats, with its metropolitan voters holding liberal values. Joe Biden won the state in the 2020 election with 60.9% of the vote and the last time it was won by a Republican was 1984, when Ronald Reagan won 53.8% of the vote.
The New York Times reports that Liverpool’s Onondaga County voted quite comprehensively for Ms Harris in the election. With 93% of the vote counted at 5am GMT, it gave her a leading margin in the county of plus 16.
However, it appears that many voters in New York may not get the result they were hoping for. At the time of writing, the NYT gave Mr Trump a 93% chance of winning the presidency, predicting he will win 302 electoral college votes to Ms Harris’ 236. It comes after Mr Trump was projected to win the key swing seat of North Carolina.
