A lightning strike at a food waste recycling plant near Oxford caused a spectacular fireball and power outage in the area. The incident occurred at the Cassington AD facility run by Severn Trent Green Power. The lightning strike resulted in an explosion in the biogas tanks at the plant. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the company is coordinating with emergency services to ensure the site’s safety before assessing the damage.
The Cassington AD plant is responsible for processing over 50,000 tonnes of solid and liquid waste annually. In addition to this, it generates 2.1 megawatts of electricity and bio-fertilizer. The facility has a contract with the local authority for waste management.
As a precautionary measure, the nearby A40 main road has been closed, and residents have been advised to stay indoors, closing windows and doors. Some local residents have also experienced power outages in the aftermath of the incident.
