With summer just around the corner, many Brits are eagerly counting down to their holidays. But before setting off on planes, ferries or the Eurostar, it’s essential to check your passport is in order.
When planning my own summer getaway recently, I discovered my passport required renewing ahead of the trip. Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, entry requirements for European destinations have been changed.
Many travellers find themselves caught out by these regulations, and if you’re travelling to Europe and Schengen zone countries, your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years from your departure date and remain valid for a minimum of three months after your intended return date.
Under these requirements, my passport was deemed expired, prompting me to get a replacement. In the past, I’d opted to renew my passport using a paper application at the Post Office.
This time around, though, I completed everything online, which proved both cheaper and easier. At present, renewing or replacing your passport through the online system costs £102.
By contrast, paper applications will set you back £115.50. Another change that has streamlined the process is that passport photo booths now supply digital versions of your photograph alongside the physical prints.
This means you receive a digital code linked to your image, which you simply input to upload it directly to the gov.uk website.
After completing your details and uploading your photograph on the UK Government website, you’ll need to send back your existing passport. I simply posted mine to the address given and awaited the arrival of my replacement.
According to the Passport Office, you should typically receive your new passport within three weeks.
Work on your new passport begins once they receive your documents, making it important to send off your old passport quickly.
To my surprise, my replacement passport arrived just one week following the posting of my old one. The entire process proved far simpler and quicker than I had anticipated.
The Passport Office does usually caution that processing times may extend during busy periods.
They note: “It may take longer than three weeks if we need more information, or we need to interview you. We’ll tell you this within 3 weeks.”
But, based on my personal experience, I encountered no difficulties and would definitely opt for the online passport service again to save both time and money.
