What is the Kennedy curse: A closer look at the familys history

The term “Kennedy Curse” is one that has intrigued the public mind over the years, often being spoken of in the same breath as power, politics, and tragedy. The Kennedy family, often considered the closest thing America has to royalty, is full of presidents, senators, and international figures.

However, along with their achievements is the history of tragedy, accident, and misfortune that has befallen them over the years. Assassination, plane crashes, and other unfortunate events have led the public to believe that the Kennedy family is indeed under some kind of dark cloud. The question is, is it really a curse, or is it simply the reality of their situation? The answer can be found not in the myths surrounding the Kennedy family, but in their history.

What is the “Kennedy curse”

The term “Kennedy Curse” has been used to describe the untimely tragedies and assassinations that have befallen the Kennedy family over the years. As The Washington Post states, the term was popularised in 1969 when Senator Ted Kennedy publicly mused on whether “some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys” in the wake of a fatal automobile accident involving Mary Jo Kopechne. The term has since stuck in the public imagination, largely because of the sheer number of tragedies associated with the Kennedy family.

However, the notion has been disputed by historians and the Kennedy family itself. As has been pointed out in the historical record, the majority of the family believes the idea to be nothing more than a coincidence.

A history of tragedies in the Kennedy family

While the tragedies date back to the 1940s, the idea of a ‘Kennedy Curse’ only emerged decades later. The National Air and Space Museum remembers that in 1944, the eldest son, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., died during his mission in World War II.

Later, his sister Kathleen Kennedy died in a plane crash at the young age of 28.The defining moments in the history of the Kennedy curse occurred in the 1960s. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, an event that shocked the world. This event stunned the world. It took just five years for his brother Robert F. Kennedy to suffer the same fate during his presidential campaign. The curse of the Kennedys has also struck in the following generations.

John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a plane crash in 1999. Other members of the Kennedy family have died in various accidents, overdoses, and illnesses.Even in recent years, the tragic incidents involving members of the Kennedy family have kept the curse alive in public memory.

Is it really a curse or a coincidence

Although the pattern of tragedies is undeniable, the term “curse” is an oversimplification of the situation. The Kennedy family is large and prominent, meaning their personal lives are always in the public eye.

As such, any occurrence, however ordinary or unusual, is well publicised and remembered.Furthermore, the personal lives of the Kennedy family have been risky. Their political involvement, private aviation activities, and their public exposure create the perfect conditions for tragedy. It is the sum of these two factors that breeds the perception of the curse, not the curse in reality. The Kennedy Heirs author J. Randy Taraborrelli told PEOPLE that the family members have also denied the curse. Eunice Kennedy Shriver suggested that the real tragedy was not the curse; it was the public scrutiny of their personal tragedies.

It was Ted Kennedy who came up with the concept of the curse after Chappaquiddick.

The enduring fascination with the Kennedy curse

Nevertheless, the idea of the “Kennedy Curse” is an important social phenomenon. This is an idea that represents the tendency that exists in human nature to seek out meaning and connection with tragedy. When a family, like the Kennedy family, experiences tragedy after tragedy, it is almost too coincidental to be coincidental. The fact is that the Kennedy family is a family that has experienced both great triumph and tragedy. Perhaps the “Kennedy Curse” is an idea that represents that even the most powerful families in the world are not above the circumstances of life.
