The organisers of an event that took place at Newshaw Park yesterday have issued an update after two people were taken to hospital following a fight. Yesterday, the ECHO reported how Merseyside Police were called to Newsham Park Hospital on Orphan Drive just after 9pm last night (Friday, April 3).
Officers confirmed two men suffered head injuries and were taken to hospital, while the venue was evacuated. Witnesses described a major emergency response, with around 15 police cars and ambulances arriving as an event was taking place inside the derelict former asylum.
The incident brought an early end to a live set by DJ D.O.D, which had been due to continue until 10pm. Footage from inside the venue shows the moment the music was stopped, as a man on stage told the crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately due to an incident we have to stop,” prompting boos from those in attendance.
As people left the venue, many reported seeing a large emergency presence, with police vehicles and ambulances lining nearby streets.
One event-goer described the moment the night was cut short. He said: “We were all stood there and it was coming up to 9pm. We were waiting for his bangers to be played and then he just cut it short and said ‘due to an incident we need you all to get out. We won’t be playing anymore.’ Then we all started booing and it just went from 0 to 100 after that.”
Following the incident, DJ D.O.D apologised to fans on social media, saying: “Liverpool I’m so sorry the show was cut short, there were multiple incidents in the crowd which led to the police shutting down the show.
“This is the last thing I wanted but your safety means more to me than carrying on the show. Music is about coming together. Hope to see you all again soon.”
Police left the scene at around 10.30pm.
Today (Saturday, April 4) the organisers of the Newsham Park Event issued a statement stating they “would like to set the record straight”.
They told the ECHO: “In relation to some news stories surrounding the Event at Newsham Park on Friday 3rd April we would like to set the record straight.
“Towards the end of the event, a fight broke out between two groups and the police were called.
“Although the incident was stopped quickly, unfortunately, some injuries were sustained to two individuals.
“Our first aid team administered aid, and the two injured individuals were sent to hospital as a precautionary measure.
“This incident took place at 9.15pm, and we decided to call time on the event just before 9.30pm. The event was due to finish at 10pm.
“Merseyside Police were satisfied with the actions taken by us as event organisers and we decided to close the event with less than 30 minutes left for safety reasons.
“We don’t condone violence at any of our events, and the safety of guests is always paramount. The management team wishes the two injured parties a speedy recovery.”
Enquiries remain ongoing.
