Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman in her 80s was fatally stabbed in Plumstead, London. A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the woman was killed outside her home on Red Lion Place.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers were called to the street at 8.50am on Wednesday (April 1) after reports of a man carrying a knife. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service also attended the scene.
The woman was found with life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, where she later died. Police also said a second man was threatened with a knife, though he escaped without injury.
A man in his 60s handed himself in at a nearby Met police station shortly after 9.10am and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was taken to hospital by officers, where he is currently being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, reports the Mirror.
Officers confirmed they are not looking for any further suspects, and believe the arrested man and the victim were known to one another.
Detective Inspector Dean Grice, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts remain firmly with the victim’s family during this difficult time.
“Officers responded swiftly to the initial reports and worked closely with London Ambulance Service colleagues to provide immediate care at the scene.
“A prompt and coordinated investigation has now been launched to establish the full circumstances, and specialist officers are continuing to support the family throughout.”
Detective Superintendent James Derham, who is responsible for policing in the area, said: “At this stage, we believe that this was an isolated incident and I want to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public.
“We understand the impact a crime like this has on the community and you can expect to see an increased police presence in the area. If you are a local resident, please do share any concerns with our officers on the ground or contact 101.”
