All You Need to Know About the Mersey Tunnel 10K
- The annual Mersey Tunnel 10k race requires the temporary closure of the Kingsway Tunnel, also known as the Wallasey Tunnel. This popular running event is the only time of year people are permitted to traverse the tunnel on foot, running beneath the River Mersey.
- The race is scheduled for Sunday, April 12, marking its 20th staging. This year has achieved a record-breaking sell-out, with over 4,100 participants confirmed to take part.
- The unique point-to-point course begins in the heart of Liverpool city centre. It eventually concludes on the Wirral at Ian Fraser Walk in New Brighton, where finishers will receive a medal and commemorative shirt.
- After emerging from beneath the River Mersey, the runners continue their journey along the Wirral. The route takes them along the Seacombe Promenade toward Fort Perch Rock and Marine Lake.
- The event draws a wide range of participants, including international runners from countries such as Denmark, France, and Malaysia. Noteworthy participants include 87-year-olds Philip Humphreys and John Devine, highlighting its broad appeal.
- The race holds a strong competitive history, with established records for both men and women. The male record currently stands at 30 minutes and 52 seconds, while the female record is 36 minutes and 19 seconds.
- The April date is strategically chosen as a key event for many runners. BTR Liverpool Founder Alan Rothwell noted that it serves as a popular final 10K warm-up for athletes competing in the London Marathon two weeks later.
- The race is ultimately celebrated for its unique subterranean course, which provides an unforgettable backdrop for participants. Organizers emphasize the uplifting, communal atmosphere that defines the annual event.
