Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Steve Hilton in the race to become California’s next governor, announcing his backing via Truth Social on Monday morning.The US President described Mr Hilton, who worked for David Cameron between 2010 and 2012, as a “truly fine man”. “I have known and respected Steve Hilton, who is running for Governor of California, for many years,” Mr Trump wrote in his endorsement.He added: “Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT…He will be a GREAT Governor and, importantly, WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!”

Mr Hilton, a former Fox News presenter who hosted The Next Revolution from 2017 to 2023, holds dual British and American citizenship.Prior to his media career, the 56-year-old served as one of the most influential figures in British politics during the coalition era, having been cited as an inspiration for the character of Stuart Pearson in the cult BBC sitcom, The Thick of It.
