The comedy has been loved by millions across the country for decades

Sir David Jason has spoken about his thoughts on creating more episodes of Only Fools and Horses in the future. The TV show has consistently been voted Britain’s most-loved comedy for its classic quotes and memorable characters. The series was on screens from 1981 until it ended in 2003.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Sir David said: “The problem is that the man who created it [John Sullivan] is no longer with us. He wrote every episode and just happened to be a genius. I’m not so sure that we have a writer clever enough to take on his mantle. No one could write the characters like he could.”

However the comedy legend said that if the right script was presented to him and his co-stars, he would be more likely to sign up for a revival.

Sir David discussed comedy now compared to when he was acting. He said: “People are too sensitive now. Yet if we can’t laugh at ourselves, we are in danger of losing our sense of comedy, which is old-fashioned British joke-telling in the nicest possible way.”

The BBC star will soon return to our screens as he is set to reunite with cast members from Only Fools And Horses for a new documentary series.

The new project will celebrate the show’s 45th anniversary and viewers will enjoy behind-the-scenes footage that was “never” broadcast.

The show provided career-defining roles for Sir David, who played Del Boy, and Nicholas Lyndhurst, who played his brother Rodney.

The two-part series features interviews with cast and crew and includes archival material from more than 10 classic episodes, including The Jolly Boys’ Outing and Mother Nature’s Son.

Cast members including Sir David, Tessa Peake-Jones (Raquel), Gwyneth Strong (Cassandra) and Sue Holderness (Marlene) will pay tribute to creator John Sullivan, who died in 2011 at the age of 64.

There is also new material from the episodes He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Uncle, Mother Nature’s Son, Time On Our Hands, and an unseen opening scene of Del and Rodney in a nightclub from The Class Of ’62.

Clips have been digitally scanned and restored from 16mm negatives.

Speaking about the new documentary, 85-year-old David said: “The love for Only Fools has never faded. It’s incredible to see how many people still hold it close to their hearts.

Revisiting these rediscovered moments reminded me just how special the show was – and still is. It’s incredible to be able to share them now.”
