U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to postpone an upcoming trip to China for a summit with President Xi Jinping if China doesn’t rally to his call for the main consumers of Gulf oil to help keep it flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump told the Financial Times on Sunday that China had an obligation to provide assistance because 90 percent of its oil imports came from the Middle East, saying it was “only appropriate” for those countries that gain the most from the key shipping lane, which Iran has effectively closed, to help reopen it. “It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the Strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there,” said Trump, who indicated he expected a response before his summit with Xi, which is scheduled for March 31. “We’d like to know before that. It’s a long time,” he added, saying that he “may delay” the visit in comments in which he also said it would be “very bad for the future of NATO” if European member nations failed to heed his call.
