An inquest into the death of former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton will be held on Friday at Stockport Coroner’s Court
An inquest into the death of ex-world boxing champion Ricky Hatton is set to take place later today. A preliminary cause of death by hanging was provided at a pre-inquest hearing, where brief information about the 46-year-old’s death was heard.
Hatton was last seen by his family on September 12 when he appeared “well”, according to Stockport Coroner’s Court. However, he failed to show up at an event the following day as anticipated.
On the morning of Sunday September 14, his manager Paul Speak arrived at his Hyde, Greater Manchester home to take him to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai.
Mr Speak discovered Mr Hatton, “unresponsive”.
The death of Hatton, a devoted father and grandfather, left his family devastated and his legion of fans shocked.
Tributes flooded in from the boxing world and the broader sporting community for Hatton, a proud Mancunian and fervent Manchester City fan.
Affable, modest, and known for his humour, Hatton, also referred to as “The Hitman”, was seen as a “People’s Champion” and loved by thousands of supporters.
His dynamic fighting style and grounded personality made him one of the most beloved fighters on both sides of the Atlantic.
Hatton’s family maintained that the former world champion was “in a good place”, who had plans for the future including his bags packed for a comeback fight in Dubai in December.
However, Hatton had been open about his mental health issues, battles with alcohol and drugs, and previous suicide attempts after he hung up his gloves for the second time following a misguided comeback in 2012.
His funeral at Manchester Cathedral saw thousands of people lining the streets, with famous faces such as Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher, ex-England and Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney, and boxers Tyson and Tommy Fury among the attendees.
The inquest into Hatton’s death is set to commence at midday at Stockport Coroner’s Court.
