Wintry conditions arrive on Tuesday night with a risk of snow and ice on Wednesday morning
According to Met Office weather maps, snow could hit Merseyside this week. After a small glimpse at some warmer days, the UK is set for a cold snap with rain, ice and sleet as well as a chance of snow in some areas.
It’s hard to believe just last week people were making the most of the sunshine. ECHO photographers captured people in the city centre enjoying a drink after work or getting some fresh air in Sefton Park.
However, there seems to be a major U-turn this week with below average temperatures. The Met Office weather maps show which areas of the UK could be hit by snow.
Merseyside will be battered by rain tonight (Tuesday March 24) “likely turning heavy at times”. It will be a chiller start to Wednesday, with some frost and risk of ice.
These wintry conditions are forecast for much of the north west as we head into Wednesday.
There are some flurries of snow forecast in areas of Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Lancashire from 6.30am.
The Met Office weather map shows which areas could be affected by snow. Much of Greater Manchester could be affected, which soon spreads over to Wigan and mid-morning, more snow flurries could be expected to the west of the region, including Southport and Formby.
The snow map moves slightly more onto Merseyside at 10.30am, when areas including St Helens could be affected. This continues to 12.30pm when there is another chance that snow could hit the region.
At 2.15pm, more areas could be affected in north Liverpool.
As the day goes on, more wintry conditions are set to make their way over from the west coast but thankfully they are forecast to move over past Merseyside and into Greater Manchester and Yorkshire.
In its more detailed forecast for tonight, the Met Office said: “Rain clearing southwards this evening, soon followed by plenty of showers. Brisk winds continuing. Feel noticeably cold by the morning with some frost and a small risk of ice. Minimum temperature 1 °C.”
Looking ahead to Wednesday, the forecaster said: “Brighter on Wednesday with sunshine and blustery showers. These heavy at times, with some hail, thunder and some snow over high ground. Feeling cold in brisk northerly winds. Maximum temperature 8 °C.”
