Customers are devastated after a long-standing Wirral restaurant announced its closure. Yiamas Greek Taverna has been based on Borough Road in Birkenhead for the last 33 years.
The whitewashed building, opposite Birkenhead Central Library, has built up a loyal customer base in that time. Therefore, there was much shock and sadness when the restaurant broke the news yesterday afternoon (Friday, March 13) that it would be closing. Owners Andy and Paul Georgiou thanked customers, saying “Your loyalty, kindness, and friendship have meant everything to the whole Yiamas team.”
The ECHO’s story on the announcement led many to leave their favourite memories of the restaurant in the comments. On the ECHO’s Facebook page, Denise Drake said: “Fabulous restaurant, great atmosphere, gorgeous authentic food, happy staff, excellent reputation. It will be missed, it’s our favourite, we have been going for 20 plus years. Wish them well.”
Jackie Allen said: “Such amazing memories and fabulous nights, so sad. I’m sending so much love to Peter for always making every time that little bit more special.”
Tom Birkett added: “This is very sad news. We’ve been going to Yiamas for 30 years and have had some wonderful family nights there. Thanks for the memories.”
Mark Whiteley said: “We loved it there, we’ve been going there for around two years. Fabulous food and service, it was unique.”
Moira McLaughlin said: “How very sad. This is such a lovely place.”
Diane Hyland said: “So sad. Such a wonderful place.”
The full statement from Andy and Paul read: “Unfortunately, after 33 incredible years, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors.
“We want to say a huge thank you for all our amazing customers who have supported us throughout the years. Your loyalty, kindness, and friendship have meant everything to the whole Yiamas team.
“One of the greatest joys for us has been being part of so many of your special moments. We’ve loved hosting your birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Christmas parties, New Year’s Eve celebrations, karaoke, Greek nights, family meals, and so many unforgettable evenings shared together.
“Seeing families grow, friends gather around our tables, and celebrations filled with laughter has meant more to us than words could ever express.
“Running Yiamas has been truly been an honour and we are so grateful for the loyalty and kindness our customers have shown us over the past three decades.
“As we close out this chapter, we just want to say thank you for an incredible 33 years. Your support, friendship, and memories will stay with us forever.”
