Viewers have witnessed Todd’s happiness disappear in the last few months
Coronation Street viewers said “it’s gone too far” as Todd and Theo’s storyline continues to play out on-screen. Soap fans have found it incresingly difficult to watch Todd’s life fall apart at the hands of his abusive partner Theo. The two characters have taken centre stage over the past year as part of a hard-hitting storyline tackling the issue of domestic abuse in same-sex relationships.
Viewers have witnessed the harrowing storyline develop from the very beginning. We’ve seen Todd meet Theo, fall head over heels and turn his life upside down with the hopes of finding happiness with Theo.
But Todd had no clue what he was getting himself into, as viewers have watched Theo transform into a terrifying abuser. With intense psychological manipulation as well as domestic violence, it’s been a really difficult watch and many viewers are hoping the storyline will soon come to an end.
Todd and Theo returned to screens on Thursday as they prepared for Theo’s birthday. But Todd’s anxiety was visible from the ofset as he realised he couldn’t afford to buy his partner a birthday gift.
Theo has been in control of the money aspects of the relationship, cutting up their bank cards and convincing Todd to use cash, meaning Todd has less and less power over his own life.
Fans took to social media during the most recent episode to express their concerns about Todd’s situation. Many soap viewers are hoping the storyline will soo come to end, as one said it’s “gone too far”.
On X, one fan said: “Gone too far this Theo storyline” while a second wrote: “Does Theo take Todd’s wages? This is appalling.”
A third said: “The Todd and Theo coercive control storyline is going on too long!”
A fourth added: “Really hate this storyline between Theo and Todd” and a fifth said: “Why is Todd still putting up with this!”
On New Year’s Eve, fans were shocked to see Todd get down on one knee and propose to his partner. Blinded by love, Todd hopes to spend the rest of his life with Theo but on the other side of the screen, viewers are desperate to see him escape this abusive relationship.
Heartbreaking scenes on New Year’s Day saw Theo physically abuse Todd, punching and kicking him onto the floor. The episode was a difficult watch for viewers with many hoping that Todd will soon see the light.
In an interview in December, Gareth Pierce, who plays Todd, told the ECHO there’s “still some way to go” for the characters before Todd can truly be happy.
Gareth said: “I wouldn’t hold your breath on seeing too much happiness too quickly. Obviously you know with these types of stories it isn’t always happy families. There’s still some way to go.”
