The first funeral for 14 auto parts company workers killed in last week’s factory fire was held in the central city of Daejeon on Wednesday. The funeral for one of the 14, known only by his family name Choi, took place at Chungnam National University Hospital’s funeral parlor, Daejeon, in the morning with the attendance of his bereaved family, relatives and friends. They held back tears at the beginning of the funeral but let out pent-up sobs as the encoffining and departure of the funeral procession began. In particular, the sight of Choi’s young son and elderly father weighed heavily on the hearts of the funeral attendees. As the funeral procession began, Choi’s father quietly said: “My son, you have suffered a lot. Let’s go now.” The fire broke out at auto parts manufacturer Anjun Industrial’s plant in the city’s Munpyeong-dong district last Friday, leaving the 14 workers dead and 60 others injured.
