Passengers at Liverpool Central train station are being warned of temporary closures to station toilets over the coming weeks as part of ongoing refurbishment work.
In a post on X, Merseyrail said: “Due to refurbishment of the toilets at Liverpool Central, some facilities will be closed for a few days. The Women’s bathroom will be closed from Monday 23rd February – Sunday 1st March. The Men’s bathroom will be closed from Monday 2nd March – Friday 6th March.”
The closures come amid a wider programme of upgrades to Merseyrail’s passenger facilities. A recent investment plan unveiled by the operator and transport bosses includes fully renovating toilets at Central station, as well as improvements to accessible facilities at Moorfields, Bank Hall and Hightown stations.
The latest works come just two years after Liverpool Central’s toilets underwent a major £300,000 refurbishment.
In 2024, the public toilets at the region’s busiest Merseyrail station closed on January 15 for a 12-week revamp.
At the time, Merseyrail said it was investing more than £300,000 to completely renovate the facilities, installing new wall and floor tiles alongside enhanced ventilation systems.
Images released following the reopening showed the male toilets redesigned in a blue colour scheme, while the female toilets featured a pink design.
At the same time as the 2024 upgrade at Central, Merseyrail confirmed that toilets at Moorfields would also be refurbished, while new accessible facilities would be installed at Moorfields, Bank Hall and Hightown.
The investment at those stations was funded by Network Rail and the Department for Transport under the Access for All Mid-Tier Scheme.
During this latest phase of works at Liverpool Central, passengers are being urged to use alternative toilets at nearby Liverpool Lime Street railway station or James Street railway station.
According to Merseyrail, disabled passengers will continue to have access to dedicated facilities at Central while work is under way.
The refurbishment forms part of efforts to address longstanding complaints about station amenities, despite the significant investment made in recent years.
