Nestle has recalled several batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula in 2026

Nestle has issued a recall for further infant formula because cereulide has been found in the product. The food safety watchdog, Food Standards Agency, has confirmed the presence of the food poisoning toxin in some Nestle baby formula products.

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Cereulide is highly heat stable meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, or when making the infant milk according to NHS guidelines. If consumed it can lead to rapid onset of symptoms.

On Friday, the Food Standards Agency confirmed arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, which plays an important role in infant development and is added to formula to ensure non-breastfed babies receive it, was the affected ingredient.

In a statement, Nestle said there were no confirmed reports of any illness linked to the products but it was making the product recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

Nestle has recalled several batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula in 2026. The Food Standards Agency, states: “Even if you have not identified ill-health in your baby as a result of consumption of this product, it is essential to stop using it.

“If the infant formula or follow-on formula was prescribed by a health professional for your infant, consult a pharmacist or other medical professional before changing formula.”

“Nestlé have also added a tool to their website that will help to identify if a batch is or not under the scope of the recall. You can access this at https://www.smababy.co.uk/product-recall If you have fed this product to a baby and have any concerns about potential health impact, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals, using the most appropriate route depending on where you live.”
