The city could be experience some snowfall in the coming days
Liverpool could be hit by snow in the coming days, according to the Met Office. The city last saw snowfall in early January, which led to flights at John Lennon Airport being grounded as crews cleared snow off the runway.
There were also a wave of cancellations on trains in the city, some buses were diverted and there was slow traffic on a number of key roads. WX Charts snow coverage maps for this month have warned Liverpool could be hit with a snow blizzard.
Snow depth charts reveal the greatest accumulations will come in the Scottish Highlands, where 54cm (21 inches) is possible. Cities including Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle and Edinburgh appear to be in the direct path as the two weather systems converge.
However, potential snow appears to be contained to hilltops and more northern regions rather than cities, and not a national blizzard as the models suggest, according to long forecast readings from the Met Office. The weather agency has predicted hill snow is “possible” in the north west of England on Wednesday, February 11 and in the coming weeks too.
In the last week, Liverpool has seen prolonged spells of wet and cold conditions and this is set to continue this weekend.
It’s been a dry start to today (Saturday, February 7) but the Met Office says rain is expected to start at 10am and last throughout the day until 8pm. The rain will be at its heaviest between 5pm and 7pm.
Temperatures will hit highs of 10C but this will feel more like 7C due to the rain and the wind. Tomorrow it is predicted that Liverpool will experience similar temperatures but it could be drier, with rain expected from 2pm until 9pm.
The Met Office’s full forecast for the north west of England said: “Today: a bit of brightness to start, though quickly turning unsettled from the south as a band of heavy showers spreads northwards through the morning, with further outbreaks through the day. Breezy at times and milder. Maximum temperature 10C.
“Tonight: heavy showers, merging into longer spells of rain this evening. These generally easing and clearing northwards overnight with some clear spells developing across the south of the region. Light winds. Minimum temperature 4C.
“Sunday: heavy showers across Cumbria to start, otherwise a drier day than of late with some brighter, albeit a few showers still possible.
“Light winds. Maximum temperature 10C.
“Outlook for Monday to Wednesday: often cloudy with spells of rain and showers into the new week, though occasional drier interludes.
“Hill snow possible on Wednesday. Breezy at times with temperatures dipping again midweek.”
