The Masked Singer viewers are convinced they know the identity of the moth. The ITV guessing game, which sees celebrities dress up in elaborate costumes in a bid to conceal their identity as they perform pop songs, has already revealed some major names in the latest series.
Stars like Sex Pistols rocker John Lydon, rapper Professor Green and, recently, singer Kate Nash and Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke have been unmasked.
Tonight’s episode, Saturday, January 7, saw the moth take to the stage to sing a version of Olivia Dean’s Man I Need. Fans quickly took to social media to claim the identity of the anonymous was “so obvious”.
Amy said: “Keisha from Sugababes defo (sic) in my opinion for moth”. Garry added: “It’s definitely a Sugababes”, whereas Jon wrote: “Keisha Buchanan was 13 when Sugababes started. Twists and turns – Round Round. They had songs called Busters and 3 spoons of Suga. And if you ‘pause’ you push the button.”
Hayley added: “Moth is definitely either Keisha or Jamelia.” Echoing a similar sentiment, Shaky said: “Moth is a trillion per cent Keisha Buchanan.”
Moth has said, “It’s time for me to face the music,” which fans believe they have a background in singing or performing. They also mentioned that they have “grown bigger than my wildest dreams,” hinting at a long or successful career.
The performer described themselves as needing “grace, power, and presence,” which fans interpret as traits of a seasoned entertainer. Another cryptic statement was that they had “served in the West until my time was up and I returned to my rightful field,” which some believe points to a connection with the West End or theatre.
Visually, Moth’s clue package has included a carrot and a candlestick, as well as a framed picture of the comedian Ronnie Corbett. There was also a blue jay or bluebird prop, which viewers speculate might hint at a name connected to “Jay” or the colour blue.
Fans on social media have suggested that these clues point to Keisha Buchanan from the Sugababes. They connect the idea of a “moth feeding on nectar” to the “sugar” in Sugababes and the idea of growth or transformation in a long-standing music career.
Other guesses from judges and viewers have included performers like Molly Ringwald, Alexandra Burke, and Nicole Scherzinger. It comes after last week’s episode saw a late addition to the roster, added in the form of Mole Dommet.
Viewers watched as host Joel Dommett welcomed “double agent” Mole to the stage, after the character was seen sneaking viewers extra clues during each of the contestants’ VTs.
Joel later confirmed Mole would finally be unmasked in the same episode. The character appeared at the top of the programme as promised, joking that their identity was “under wraps” before the reveal.
Mole turned out to be pop star Olly Murs, with the only hint nodding to his 2014 track Wrapped Up. However, The ECHO previously reported how The Masked Singer viewers cried foul saying it was impossible to guess a late arrival without proper clues.
