The city is set to transform into a dazzling spectacle of red and gold
Preparation is well underway for Chinese New Year 2026, with the city set to transform into a dazzling spectacle of red and gold. A vibrant list of events has been unveiled, promising spectacular firecracker displays, traditional unicorn and dragon parades, captivating Chinese dance and music performances, and hours of family-friendly entertainment.
Thousands of red lanterns decorate the streets around Chinatown, Liverpool ONE and Royal Albert Dock leading up to the main celebrations, and some of the city’s most iconic buildings – including Liverpool Town Hall and St George’s Hall – will be illuminated red in honour of the new year.
This year also sees the installation of two breath-taking lantern centrepieces – a majestic horse and a pair of formidable dragons have been specially commissioned by Culture Liverpool, Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, and Liverpool ONE for this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations.
Photos captured by ECHO photographer Colin Lane show celebrations have already begun. The Royal Albert Dock was illuminated with vibrant imagery as horses appeared to dance across the historic building in a dazzling display.
