Today marks the start of Chinese New Year 2026
Chinese New Year 2026 officially starts today. The world welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse today (Tuesday, February 17) – a period traditionally linked to renewal, new beginnings, and revitalised prosperity. Liverpool always goes all out for Chinese New Year, with celebrations taking place across the city.
This year, Liverpool will once again host a packed programme of events, featuring firecracker displays, unicorn and dragon parades, as well as traditional Chinese dance and music.
The principal celebrations will take place on Sunday, February 22, centred in and around Chinatown and Great George Square. A smaller and more relaxed programme is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, offering a quieter opportunity to take part in the festivities ahead of the main event.
