The family of a Scouser fighting for his life in Thailand have issued a further update on his condition. According to his girlfriend, Amy Elkin, 21-year-old Zak Forsyth was sober and riding a scooter when it collided with a car last week. The driver took him to hospital, but Zak has suffered serious and potentially life-changing injuries.
Zak, from Huyton, is currently in a coma in intensive care. Because he did not have medical or travel insurance, all hospital and treatment costs must be covered by his family.
Amy, who recently flew to Thailand on Monday February 9, to be with Zak, previously told the ECHO how police arrived at her home to inform the family of the accident after the British Embassy identified Zak.
She said: “He was coming back from somewhere. His friends didn’t even know about it. He’s got a bleed on the brain, a broken nose, a broken jaw, broken ankle and broken arm.”
Amy confirmed Zak has not yet undergone surgery and remains in intensive care, adding his family would need £30,000 to cover the cost of surgery alone. This figure has since risen to £60,000 due to mounting medical costs.
In a further update shared with the ECHO on Monday, Amy said Zak has been placed on new medication to help reduce swelling on his brain. Doctors are currently unable to operate until his condition stabilises, explaining surgery will only be attempted if the situation becomes a matter of “life and death”.
Amy said Zak has two blood clots and a bleed on the brain. She said: “We’re hoping the swelling goes down enough for the clots to heal on their own but nothing is certain. The doctor said he is still in a life threatening condition.
“The prices of the medical bills are rising each day with us having to pay £5,000 every seven days to keep him in ICU.
“We just need his page to be noticed as much as possible to be able to cover the medical bills.”
The family continue to hope they can eventually bring Zak back home to Merseyside. On the JustGiving page, Amy wrote: “Every little will help us. Thanks to everyone who’s helped so far. Get my boy home.”
When the ECHO first shared the fundraising appeal, more than £9,000 had been raised. At the time of writing, donations have risen to just under £34,000, meaning the family are now just over half-way towards their £60,000 target.
Since the story was published, hundreds of supportive messages have been shared by readers. In the comments section of one of our Facebook posts, Hayley Eaton said: “Liverpool is an amazing city the way people come together to help and support their children.
“Keep sharing and donating to save Zak’s life, it’s every parent’s nightmare. I’m praying for a miracle for his family.”
