Everything you need to know:

  • A football supporter reported being targeted by a gang while walking home through Stanley Park after a Liverpool FC match on February 14. He described the experience as a life-threatening encounter that has left him terrified to attend future games.
  • The victim left Anfield shortly before full time and was approached by two young men in camouflage jackets near a park bridge. The interaction turned hostile after one of the individuals attempted to steal the man’s hat and began shouting at him.
  • A larger group of approximately six males, aged between 14 and 21, surrounded the man and launched a physical attack. The victim said he was punched and knocked to the ground before being kicked twice in the head.
  • During the struggle, one member of the group reportedly pulled a small kitchen knife from his trousers and lunged at the victim. The attacker only backed down after another member of the group intervened and told him to stop.
  • The victim, who suffers from arthritis, sustained injuries to his knees and head during the scuffle. Beyond the physical pain, he expressed deep psychological distress, stating he fully expected to be stabbed during the ordeal.
  • The man noted that the extreme darkness of the route from the park fields to Langham Street made it impossible to find help. He was eventually able to reach a better-lit area on foot before contacting the local authorities.
  • The victim believes the attack may have been racially motivated, citing a history of experiencing similar abuse within the city. He is now appealing for other supporters who may have been in the area to come forward with information.
  • Merseyside Police confirmed they are investigating the attempted robbery and have stepped up patrols in the Stanley Park area. While they noted the report of a knife, they stated that no formal injuries were recorded at the immediate time of the report.
