Police said officers were called to reports of an active shooter at the secondary school on Tuesday, February 10
10 people have lost their lives and at least 25 others have been injured following a shooting at a secondary school in a remote part of Canada.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers were called to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on Tuesday, February 10, after reports of an active shooter.
RCMP Senior Media Relations Officer Staff Sergeant Kris Clark initially confirmed there were “multiple victims”. Police later said 10 people had died and 25 more had been hurt. The number of casualties may rise as emergency crews continue their response.
An emergency alert was sent to residents in Tumbler Ridge and surrounding areas at around 3.15pm local time, urging people to remain indoors. The RCMP said: “Those in the Tumbler Ridge area are asked to stay inside and shelter in place, lock your doors and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time.”
Police entered the school to investigate the reports, while an air ambulance was dispatched to the scene, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
The suspect was earlier described by local outlet CJDC-TV News as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress. Police say the suspected shooter is now understood to be dead. In an update, Staff Sergeant Clark said: “The original suspect is believed to have been located deceased. Work continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims involved.”
Officers are now working to establish whether anyone else was involved in the shooting.
Local reports state that every available police officer in the region has been deployed to Tumbler Ridge. School District 59 confirmed that both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School were placed under lockdown during the shock incident.
