On 21 February 1966, President Charles de Gaulle announced he would withdraw France from NATO’s integrated military command. The move aimed to reclaim control over French troops and assert France’s freedom to act independently, without leaving the alliance. On 7 March 1966, de Gaulle officially informed US president Lyndon Johnson that France was pulling out.
