Trump tries to circumvent Cabinet member while openly grumbling about their ‘failure’: WSJ

President Donald Trump is rapidly losing faith in one of his most senior-level Cabinet members, and his complaints about her have lately become more frequent. That’s according to a Monday article in the Wall Street Journal, which reported that Trump views Attorney General Pam Bondi as “weak and an ineffective enforcer of his agenda.” The Journal cited unnamed administration officials and others close to the president in reporting that Trump is angling for Bondi to be more aggressive in using the Department of Justice (DOJ) to pursue his political enemies. The Journal further reported that Trump is now considering naming various special counsels to handle investigations into his opponents, as he is unhappy with the pace of Bondi’s DOJ in filing criminal charges against his chief rivals. The president is reportedly upset with how the DOJ has handled the investigations of former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) in the Eastern District of Virginia. The cases against Comey and James were ultimately dismissed after Lindsey Halligan — who Trump appointed to the replace U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert after he was pressured to resign for saying there was insufficient evidence to bring cases — was found to have been improperly appointed.Trump is also reportedly upset with Bondi over her handling of documents pertaining to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. According to the Journal, the president publicly agreed with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles when she told Vanity Fair that Bondi “completely whiffed” on the Epstein files and caused months of political consternation for Trump. The president is also reportedly upset that Bondi hasn’t done more to investigate the 2020 election, which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. The complaints with Bondi also reportedly run deep within Trump’s MAGA base. Former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon claimed that Bondi was “bleeding support” from Trump’s “most loyal troops” due to a perceived lack of urgency.”Folks are desperate for action and just haven’t seen it,” Bannon said. The Journal’s report comes on the heels of a recently announced DOJ investigation into Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell renovation of its Washington D.C. offices. Powell has maintained that the investigation is due to him refusing to accede to Trump’s demand that the Fed lower interest rates. Despite the report, the White House is praising Bondi on the record, with Trump telling the outlet: “Pam is doing an excellent job. She has been my friend for many years. Tremendous progress is being made against radical left lunatics who are good at only one thing, cheating in elections and the crimes they commit.”Click here to read the Journal’s full report (subscription required).
