A video showing a driver reaching speeds of over 120mph and recklessly weaving through traffic is being investigated by police following a fatal head-on crash in Bolton on Sunday (January 11).

The footage shows a car travelling at high speed down a busy street, overtaking other vehicles and dangerously swerving onto the opposite side of the road. At one point, the speedometer appears to hit 122mph.

The video is believed to have been filmed by an occupant of the Seat Leon involved in the fatal crash on Wigan Road. Three teenagers in the Seat died, as well as the driver of a Citroen C4 Picasso taxi.

Today (January 12), the taxi driver has been identified as 54-year-old Masrob Ali.

A timestamp on the clip, which has been shared extensively on social media, states it was filmed at 3am, which is understood to be Saturday morning (January 10) – almost 24 hours before the fatal crash at 12.50am on Sunday, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Greater Manchester Police are understood to be probing the clip as part of their investigations.

Police said emergency crews were scrambled to the scene on Wigan Road after the red Seat collided head-on with the Picasso. The driver of the Seat and two passengers died.

They have been identified as being Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar, 18, Farhan Patel, 18, and 19-year-old Mohammed Danyaal. The driver of the Picasso, 54-year-old Masrob Ali also died in the ‘devastating’ crash.

Five injured passengers were taken to hospital from the scene. In the Citroen, a 29-year-old woman suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

A 28-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man suffered serious injuries and a 29-year-old man has minor injuries. An 18-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Seat, remains in hospital for treatment on minor injuries.

Mr Ali’s family described him as being ‘the gentlest soul’. They said he had worked as a taxi driver for around 10 years.

His oldest child, 29-year-old Humayra, said: “Nobody has a bad word to say against him, he was so kind and the best dad. When they knocked on our door and told us what had happened I was just so confused.

“Dad was such a safe driver and even when we said we were worried something might happen he would say ‘don’t worry about me’.”

Detective Inspector Andrew Page, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are still in the early stages of our investigation and work is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this terrible incident. As an investigation team we would encourage people to be mindful of sharing footage on social media given the impact this will have on all the families involved in such a tragic incident.

“Thanks to patrols in the area, teams were able to get to the incident location quickly to what was a particularly challenging scene for colleagues in the emergency services. I want to thank first responders from our Bolton district and the Road Policing Unit, alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service for their hard work since this incident.

“The scene closed on Sunday evening, but we are still appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw the vehicle driving before the collision, witnessed the incident itself, or has dashcam/ CCTV footage of the incident can share it with us.

“You can contact us on directly on 0161 856 4741, quoting log number 111 of 11/01/2025. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
