There is a large police presence in Kirkdale this morning as police have sealed off a main road
An area surrounding Stanley Road in Kirkdale has been cordoned off this morning, January 9. Three police vehicles were spotted at the scene at around 8.30am, and a portion of the road between Great Mersey Street and Latham Street remains closed in both directions.
Traffic and transport services have been affected by the road closure. Arriva North West bus services reported on social media: “Due to police incident on Stanley Road between Boundary Street and Lambeth Road Services 47, 300, 52, 52A and 55 will operate via Lambeth Road, Smith Street and Scotland Road in both directions. Services will be subject to delays and short notice cancellations.”
The ECHO has approached Merseyside Police for comment.

A van from Merseyside Police’s Matrix unit, dedicated to tackling gun crime, has arrived at the scene.

Sterling Way is also closed to the public
A police car and several officers are stationed on the corner of Lemon Street and St Alphonsus Street inside the cordon. Sterling Way leading to Stanley Road is also cordoned off.

Resident ‘heard funny noises’ before police turned up
Many people on Great Mersey Street woke up to find half of their street closed off. One person told the ECHO: “I want to know what happened. I’ve got a daughter who I’ve just took to school. It’s scary.”
A man who lives in a flat on Stanley Road said: “I heard funny noises this morning at around 5am. I don’t know what the noises were but it definitely wasn’t fireworks. Then I heard them again and saw the police turning up.”

Traffic queues in Kirkdale as road closures take effect
Traffic is building up in Kirkdale as Stanley Road remains closed. A police car is parked on Great Mersey Street and a van on Heriot Street is visible, an ECHO reporter said. There are several officers in the area.

Multiple streets closed off as police remain at scene
ECHO reporter Jamie Greer has arrived at the scene and says the area cordoned off comprises Great Mersey Street from Edmonton Close to Stanley Road, Heriot Street, Lemon Street and St Alphonsus Street.
