Coronation Street viewers were mind blown when it was revealed that Carl Webster was actually Debbie Webster’s son, not her half-brother. Actor Jonathan Howard first arrived on the cobbles as the charming yet manipulative Carl Webster last year and has been at the centre of the drama ever since.
Jonathan’s soap debut was the first time the character of Carl Webster appeared on screen, rarely mentioned by his two half-siblings Debbie and Kevin. He wasted no time in ruffling feathers, taking a shine to Kevin’s wife Abi.
An affair soon unravelled, leading to the end of Abi and Kevin’s marriage and a fracture in the Webster family. But it wasn’t just Abi who Carl was interested in, he also ignited a fling with James Bailey, used Debbie’s dementia as a way to steal money from the hotel, ran over Tyrone in a hit and run as well as completing endless amounts of secret dodgy dealings at the garage to make more money to buy a one-way flight to Germany.
But Carl’s plans were soon scrapped after an unforgettable night at Debbie’s wedding which saw Billy Mayhew lose his life. Worlds collided in the first ever soap crossover episode last week. Fans were delighted to see their favourite Weatherfield characters come face to face with their Yorkshire-based counterparts, although in heartbreaking circumstances.
It was jam-packed from start to finish, possibly too much to put into words. The characters were caught up in the aftermath of Debbie and Ronnie’s wedding which soon turned into a tragic night as the sun set.
A drunken Carl drove Debbie recklessly down the country lanes before he found himself crashing into the vehicles stopped in the middle of a dark country lane.
But one terrifying moment saw Carl manoeuvre an unconscious Debbie into the driver’s seat, framing her for the crash.
Carl has continued to gaslight Debbie into thinking she was driving to pass the blame onto her. He has succeeded in persuading her to plead guilty, and fans are terrified of Debbie losing everything.
During Thursday’s episode, Debbie listened deeply to Carl and told him: “What’s done is done, the accident is on me”, which was exactly what Carl wanted to hear.
But the ending to tonight’s episode explained all about Debbie’s actions. The reason she has been so protective towards Carl after everything he has done is because she is his biological mum.
Debbie lifted a box to look at old photos with Carl, but hidden underneath was a hospital band from the day Carl was born. As the Chariot Square hotel owner lifted it out of the box, it had “Carl” written on it with “Mother, Deborah Webster on the back.”
The huge twist changes everything for the Webster family, with fans wondering if she will ever reveal the truth.
Taking to social media after the major reveal, fans described the moment as “jaw-dropping”. One said: “What a jaw dropping moment! It all makes sense now! Carl isn’t Debbie’s brother at all…. He’s her son! Now I’m excited to see how the story unfolds!”
A second said: “Bloody hell I did not see that coming.” A third added: “Wait, what?! That explains why Debbie is always protecting Carl and giving him chance after chance.”
However, other viewers said completely the opposite as they claimed they saw the surprise coming. One said: “Well that wasn’t a surprise at all finding out Debbie is actually Carl’s mum, not his sister.”
A second said: “Saw it coming with Carl/Debbie but I think it works and has so much story potential. And some great performances coming ahead, too.”
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
