A guest on Antiques Roadshow was left stunned after discovering the true worth of her “unusual” collection.
The popular BBC programme, hosted by Fiona Bruce, returned to our screens on Sunday (January 18), this time broadcasting from Cromford Mills in Derbyshire.
Many locals were eager to have their cherished items appraised by the show’s experts. However, the episode took an unexpected turn when one participant presented her unique assortment of items.
Expert Joanna Hardy was shown the guest’s collection of gold and silver jewellery pieces, which included a bracelet and a brooch. Joanna expressed her admiration, saying: “My goodness. My heart jumped when I saw these pieces.”, reports the Express.
The guest revealed she had purchased the first piece of jewellery 35 years ago, thinking it was merely “I just thought it was diamantes and posh costume jewellery.”
Each piece bore the name George Weil, identified by Joanna as a sculptor. The guest acknowledged: “They’re just so unusual.” Joanna agreed, adding: “They’re so against the grain of what people would normally feel comfortable in wearing.”
She then disclosed that the pieces were made of 18-carat gold and platinum. The guest confessed she had paid “quite a lot” for the items in total, around £1,500 – but was left speechless when she learned their current value.
Referring to one of the items, Joanna stated: “Well I think today they would be around £15,000.”
The guest exclaimed: “Oh never,” her jaw dropping as audible gasps rippled through the audience. She quickly added: “Sorry I nearly swore” whilst covering her mouth, visibly stunned by the revelation.
She went on: “Really! ? My goodness me.” Detailing each piece individually, Joanna explained: “You’ve got this brooch here, that’s going to be between £5,000 and £7,000,” prompting the guest to respond: “Never!”.
The specialist then revealed that a second brooch could command between £3,000 and £5,000. The guest responded: “I just can’t believe it.” Finally, Joanna stated the “lovely” ring would achieve £2,500, bringing the combined valuation for the entire collection to a staggering £25,000.
Antiques Roadshow airs every Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.
