A guest on the Antiques Roadshow was floored by her valuation with onlookers left audibly gasping at the eye-watering sum quoted.
Expert Joanna Hardy met a pensioner with an impressive collection during an episode filmed at London’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery which aired as a repeat tonight (January 11). She brought along a selection of her jewellery which included a necklace, bracelet, thick chain with a pendant featuring the Pisces sign, plus a bejewelled ring.
She shared how the pieces came into her possession, recalling that she treated herself to the necklace after a season spent working as a holiday rep in Sorrento, Italy.
Moving on to the bracelet, she shared that it was a gift from her Italian ex-partner who splurged £60 on the piece. The pendant was handmade by a jeweller she knew, while the ring was made with diamonds she already owned.
“My goodness me, you’ve had some very generous people in your life,” Joanna remarked. “But you’ve also been given, or bought, very well in terms of the quality of the pieces because they’ve got such a lovely weight to them.”
She went on: “They’re all 18ct gold. Today gold has just gone through the roof and the diamond in the centre [of the ring] it’s all beautifully set and that’s just about, nearly, a two carat stone.”
The guest asked: “Does any one of them stand out?” to which Joanna replied she would wear “any one of those”, unable to pick her favourite.
As the moment of valuation came, Joanna revealed: “I’m going to do a global valuation here. At auction, they would go for around £14,000,” which elicited gasps from onlookers.
In shock at the price, the guest replied: “I’m known as chatty Anne but maybe this time I’m a little bit dumbfounded,” adding: “I didn’t think they would be quite as valuable.”
After the valuation had sunk in, she addressed the cameras and revealed the impact chatting about the pieces had on her.
She shared: “Discussing the memories, which I haven’t done for a long time of the provenance of where I got them from was lovely. It made me realise how special they are. They’re not just pieces of jewellery, they’re part of me.”
