Details of Donald Trump’s Greenland deal have come to light after the President struck a “draft framework agreement” with Nato.Mr Trump and the alliance’s chief, Mark Rutte, shook hands on a major proposal on Wednesday evening – potentially bringing an end to years of US threats to seize the territory entirely. The President called it a “great solution for the United States of America, and all Nato nations”.Under the proposals, the US will take over small parts of Greenland by designating them as sovereign military bases.

A draft framework is said to mirror Britain’s agreement with Cyprus for the pair of RAF bases at Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which are vital for British power projection in the Middle East. The bases would be considered American territory in the Arctic region – perhaps via an indefinite lease like Guantanamo Bay, in Cuba. The Cyprus-UK plan is said to be viewed as a creative way of agreeing to Mr Trump’s demands to own Greenland.A diplomatic source told The Telegraph: “The idea was to give Trump a deal.”As a result, the US would be able to perform military operations, intelligence, and training, and a level of local development including mining for rare earth minerals – without Denmark’s permission. The US is already allowed to build and run military bases in Greenland, like the Pituffik Space Base, with full “freedom of operation” in designated defence areas, including air, land, and sea.But the new framework would allow the US to directly control parts of Greenland.America would not have to seek permits or planning permission from local authorities if it wanted to mine on its soil.GREENLAND – READ MORE:Donald Trump rules out ‘using force’ to take Greenland as he slams ‘catastrophic’ BritainDonald Trump drops trade war threat after ‘very productive’ Nato meeting on Greenland takeoverNigel Farage declares ‘no doubt’ world would be safer if Donald Trump took over GreenlandThe proposal would also make it easier for the US to set out its military assets and finally build its Israel-style “Golden Dome” missile defence system. On Wednesday evening, Mr Rutte was asked by Fox News whether Greenland would still be “under the Kingdom of Denmark in this framework deal”.”That issue did not come up anymore in my conversations tonight with the President,” he said in response. The Nato chief said Mr Trump “is very much focused on what do we need to do to make sure that that huge Arctic region – where change is taking place at the moment, where the Chinese and the Russians are more and more active – how we can protect it”.Though Vladimir Putin claimed whatever happens in Greenland “is of absolutely no consequence” to Russia.A Nato spokesman said negotiations between Denmark, Greenland, and the US will go forward “aimed at ensuring that Russia and China never gain a foothold – economically or militarily – in Greenland”.But neither a date nor a venue has been set for any talks. Mr Trump said he had tasked Vice President JD Vance – who visited Greenland last year – Secretary of State Marco Rubio and envoy Steve Witkoff to take part in further discussions.
