John Paul McCoy was sentenced to 17 years and nine months after a man was left brain-damaged following a burglary assault
A man who fled onto a Walton rooftop in a bid to escape justice after carrying out a brutal burglary is wanted by the police. John Paul McCoy was caged for 17 years and nine months in 2015 for conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, assaults on two police officers and for breach of bail after a drug dealer was left brain-damaged.
Karl Allen, then 23, suffered “life-changing” injuries after a gang broke into his house in Woodrock Road, Woolton on August 7, 2013. His heart stopped beating for several minutes following the horrific stabbing, leaving him confined to a wheelchair and in need of 24-hour care.
McCoy was among four men sentenced as part of the conspiracy. But his story made headlines after he tried to evade police officers by fleeing onto a roof.
He was arrested by police after finally coming down from the roof of a house on Church Road in Walton following a nine-hour stand-off.
McCoy, now 38 and of the Fairfield area, is wanted by Merseyside Police for breaching the terms of his licence conditions following his release from prison.
He is described as 5ft 8in tall, of medium build, short brown curly hair and may be clean shaven. McCoy is known to frequent Liverpool City Centre, Toxteth and Kensington.
Liverpool Crown Court previously heard how the burglary was “clearly targeted” and the armed gang disguised themselves and their vehicle.
The judge said: “Karl Allen remained in intensive care for four weeks. He has suffered brain damage, is restricted to a wheelchair and is totally dependent on others. He is now described as being almost childlike. He suffered life-changing injuries, both physically and psychologically.”
The officer who led the case added: “This was an horrendous attack on a young man who should be enjoying his life and going out with his friends.
“Instead, he suffered life-changing injuries and he and his family have been having to come to terms with the fact that he has been robbed of his future.”
Others jailed as part of the investigation were Stephen McCoy, formerly of Rice Lane; Lee Montague, of Moss Street in Garston; and Ryan Burrell, formerly of Park Road in Dingle.
John Paul McCoy, who had dozens of convictions including for other burglaries and assaults, was also sentenced for an assault of two female police officers.
