‘Step down!’ Major revolt hits Dems as moderates cave in shutdown

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is facing fresh demands that he quit as the Democrats’ Senate leader after reports reveal that eight moderate Senate Democrats plan to cooperate with Republicans and vote to end the government shutdown — without securing the party’s key demand on health care subsidies.“Chuck Schumer is unable to lead the Democratic Party,” wrote Nina Turner, former Ohio senator and co-chair of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) 2020 presidential campaign, in a social media post on X Sunday night. “Step down from leadership Schumer.”Now in its 41st day, the ongoing government shutdown began on Oct. 1 after Democrats refused to support any spending bill that didn’t include an extension of Obamacare subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of this year. If allowed to expire, an estimated 4 million Americans would lose health insurance, and premiums for millions of Obamacare enrollees would more than double. While Democrats have held firm on their demand since the shutdown began, a pool of eight moderate Senate Democrats have agreed to vote on a spending bill to re-open the government, and without an agreement on an extension of the Obamacare subsidies, instead securing a promise from Republicans that the chamber would vote on extending the subsidies in December.“Has there ever been a man who’s failed to meet the moment more than Chuck Schumer?” wrote Aaron Regunberg, a former Rhode Island lawmaker and attorney, in a social media post on X. “Relentlessly, incessantly, unstoppably wrong at every turn, Schumer is going to go down in history as the worst Dem legislative leader in modern times, and it’s not even particularly close.”Even Democratic members of Congress began lashing out at Schumer, including Rep. Ro Khanna, who called for the 74-year-old Democratic leader to be “replaced.”“Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,” Khanna wrote in a social media post on X. “If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?”As of early Monday morning, the Senate has yet to vote on the spending bill that would re-open the government, though late Sunday the chamber did vote 60-40 to advance consideration of the bill. Members of the House have been told they should expect the spending bill to pass and to vote on it themselves sometime “this week,” The New York Times reported.Has there ever been a man who’s failed to meet the moment more than Chuck Schumer?
