President Lee Jae-myung’s public approval rating rose above 50 percent, just one week into his term in office, a poll showed Thursday. In a National Barometer Survey conducted from Monday to Wednesday, 53 percent of the respondents replied Lee was doing well in managing state affairs, while 19 percent said he was doing poorly. Another 28 percent said they were unsure. When asked about their expectation for Lee’s future performance, 65 percent of the respondents said they believe he will do well, while 24 percent replied negatively. The approval rating for the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) rose to 45 percent, up 5 percentage points from the previous week. The People Power Party saw its approval rating slip to 23 percent, down 8 percentage points, widening the gap with the DP to 22 percentage points. On Lee’s appointment of top government officials, 57 percent replied Lee made “good choices,” while 23 percent disagreed.
