U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that he will nominate National Security Advisor Mike Waltz as his ambassador to the U.N. and task Secretary of State Marco Rubio to double as his top security adviser in the interim. Trump made the announcement in a social media post, after Waltz faced criticism for having inadvertently added a journalist to a Signal group chat regarding sensitive military operations. “I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first,” he wrote on Truth Social. “I know he will do the same in his new role. In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department,” he added. According to CNN, Alex Wong, the deputy national security advisor, and other national security advisors are also expected to depart, though timing is unclear.
