The women called 999 after becoming stuck in sinking mud
Two women and three dogs were rescued today after becoming trapped in sinking mud. Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team were called to Thurstaston Beach in Wirral this afternoon, Tuesday, April 1.
With the tide still rising, the situation became critical as water began to surround them. RNLI West Kirby Lifeboat was launched immediately and the women and dogs were located in the water.
They had managed to free themselves from the mud but still needed help to make it ashore. Once safely ashore, they were handed over to awaiting Coastguard Rescue officers and Mersey Fire crews until an ambulance arrived. No further medical treatment was needed.
Following the incident, Michael Buratti, Coastguard Area Commander issued a warning to beach-goers: “Mud can trap you very quickly and easily, leaving you unable to move and it’s particularly dangerous when the tide is coming in.
“Today, the two women did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard. We sent the specialist mud rescue teams and worked with other agencies to ensure all involved got to safety.
“Sinking mud is not always easily noticeable so we would advise following the information on local signs as that will have bespoke safety information relevant to the area.”
The coastguard has issued tips on keeping safe. They said:
- Check tide times and weather before heading out
- Pay attention to warning signs and follow advice
- If stuck, sit back and spread your weight
- Don’t let others try to rescue you—they could get trapped too
