A woman has been arrested after a man was assaulted in the city centre. Emergency services were called to Mathew Street at around 10.10pm on Monday, April 21.

It followed a report a man in his 20s had suffered a small puncture wound to his torso, described as superficial by paramedics. Police said the man also had cuts to his hands after being assaulted with a “sharp implement”.

North West Ambulance Service attended but the man declined treatment and left the scene. Officers later found the man, however he declined to co-operate with police.

A spokesperson for the force said a 27-year-old woman from Dingle was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent (Section 18).

She has been taken into custody to be questioned.

A small kitchen knife was also seized.

Merseyside Police said officers have spoken to witnesses at the scene and are looking at CCTV opportunities in the area. Detective Inspector Jay Boardman appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen something to come forward to police.

In a statement, he said: “This incident happened in the city centre, and we know there would have been people out enjoying the Bank Holiday who may have witnessed it.

“If you have any information, however small it may seem, please contact police. Merseyside Police is committed to tackling knife crime and bringing those prepared to carry and use knives to justice

“We conduct stop searches, warrants and land searches all year round to take such weapons out of circulation and continue to appeal for the public’s help to tell us who is storing and carrying them.”
